WHAT IS RADIESSE?
Radiesse is an injectable filler that was approved for cosmetic use in the nasolabial folds by the FDA at the end of 2006. Dr. Rivkin started injecting this filler the day it was approved and has been using it on a daily basis ever since. Our Radiesse patients have had excellent results with Radiesse and it continues to be one of our most popular fillers. Radiesse is composed of calcium hydroxylapatite complexed with cellulose. The effect of this filler lasts for 9 to 14 months, depending on the individual. Because it is not animal based, there is no allergy testing required prior to treatment. Calcium hydroxylapatite is biodegradable, so it is safely absorbed by your body over time.
Radiesse is revolutionary because it provides the best lift of all of the fillers currently available, because it lasts for a relatively long time and because it is fully biocompatible. Radiesse is the thickest filler available. As such, it provides the maximum of lift when injected. This is a critical quality when we are using fillers to advance the chin in the Non Surgical Chin Augmentation procedure, lift the tip of the nose in the Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty procedure or re-fill the cheeks in the Non Surgical Cheek Augmentation procedure. The calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres are made of the same calcium that is in your bones and teeth. The body naturally breaks down calcium over time, but it takes longer to break down Radiesse than most hyaluronic acid based fillers, allowing patients to enjoy their results for longer.
RADIESSE PROCEDURE
After injection of Radiesse, your body’s skin cells grow around the calcium hydroxylapatite particles. The Radiesse acts like scaffolding through which the body’s cells grow. Within about a week, the cellulose becomes replaced by your own collagen and connective tissue and the filler becomes integrated into the skin. As part of the skin, Radiesse does not move and is very durable. The result is a soft, pliable filled area, which looks natural.
After about a year your body absorbs the filler and the injections can be repeated, meaning that the treated area can be adjusted to compliment the changes that occur in your face over time. We have recently observed that Radiesse injections result in stimulation of collagen growth in the area where the material is injected. The collagen stimulation provides a volume benefit even after the Radiesse dissolves for many people. Chances are that this effect will last for a significant period of time, even after the Radiesse dissolves.

Radiesse injections work well to replace the volume that certain parts of the face lose with time. The cheeks, nasolabial folds and the area under the corners of the mouth are examples of where Dr. Rivkin injects Radiesse to refill volume.
Radiesse injections also work well to sculpt areas of the face such as the nose or the chin, changing the contours or enhancing certain parts of these features to make them more symmetric or harmonious with the rest of the face.
Radiesse injections cause minimal pain, mild swelling, and require no recovery time. Most people can go back to work the same day or the next morning. For those with a lower pain threshold, a topical numbing cream is applied prior to treatment. In addition, we use ice during treatment to optimize comfort.

RADIESSE TREATMENTS
Radiesse is an exceptional product for patients seeking a non-permanent option. Although the product is not reversible like hyaluronic acid fillers, it does dissolve naturally over time. Because of its thick consistency, Radiesse is often used in areas where more lift is desired.
For example, patients seeking a defined bridge, cheek bones, jaw line or chin are often perfect candidates for this filler. Dr. Rivkin will sometimes combine Radiesse with other injectable fillers for maximum correction. As with any injectable filler, there is always a risk of mild swelling and bruising. These symptoms usually go away within two weeks.
With advancements in technology, there are now longer lasting temporary fillers on the market. For example, some patients now opt for products such as Voluma (which tends to last 1.5 – 2 yrs), instead of Radiesse (which lasts for 9 – 14 months). However, because Radiesse stimulates the body’s own collagen, it continues to be the more attractive option in certain situations.
