WHAT IS A NON-SURGICAL
CHIN ENHANCEMENT?
Facial proportions are the key to beauty and a well proportioned chin plays a critical role. An underdeveloped chin makes the nose appear larger and the area under the chin look more full. Traditionally, the only way to enhance the chin was by surgical placement of a silicone implant under general or local anesthesia.
This procedure involves up to two weeks of swelling and several days of pain. The results can be very good, and for certain patients who have severe under-projection of the chin it is the only treatment that makes sense, but many patients with mild to moderate under-projection no longer need to undergo the risk, expense and discomfort.

Dr. Rivkin’s signature Chin Augmentation technique will correct most weak or recessive chins without invasive surgery. Dr. Rivkin has been refining and perfecting this technique for over 15 years and it is better and safer than ever! A simple five minute injection of filler is all it takes to create a natural, more balanced facial appearance. Dr. Rivkin typically uses Lyft, Voluma, Radiesse or Bellafill injectable fillers. Voluma is the latest generation hyaluronic acid (HA) filler in the Juvederm line of products, which have been safely and successfully providing beautiful results to patients for many years. The effects of this filler last up to two years and are completely reversible if results are unsatisfactory or need to be adjusted. Lyft is a more robust version of Restylane. It is also a hyaluronic acid filler and last for about 10 months. Lyft is fully reversible. Radiesse is a filler composed of calcium hydroxylapatite complexed with cellulose. Radiesse is the most robust filler available today and it is ideal for patients with more pronounced retrusion. Calcium hydroxylapatite is biodegradable, so it is safely absorbed by your body over time.
The effect of this filler lasts for 9 to 14 months, depending on the individual. Because neither of these two fillers is animal based, there is no allergy testing required prior to treatment. For patients who desire permanent results, Dr. Rivkin can perform the Non-Surgical Chin Augmentation procedure with Bellafill®. Bellafill® is the first long term to permanent injectable filler approved by the FDA and it represents a new chapter in non-invasive cosmetic treatments. The filler is composed of 80% purified bovine collagen with 20% polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microspheres. For best results, two to three sessions are needed and a skin test is required before the first treatment Studies have shown that the cosmetic effect of Bellafill® persists for 10 years or more.
THE NON-SURGICAL CHIN ENHANCEMENT PROCEDURE
During your initial consultation at our clinic, Dr. Rivkin will evaluate your existing profile, desired end results, and explain the procedure in detail. At this time, he will also go over the different options of injectable filler available to best suit your needs.
You will have the opportunity to view before and after photos, so that you will know exactly what to expect from the treatment. If you decide to proceed with the procedure, a topical numbing cream is first applied for 15 to 30 minutes to decrease any discomfort.
Small amounts of the chosen filler are then injected into precise areas, building up the chin and bringing your profile into balance. Results of this non-surgical procedure are more precise because Dr. Rivkin expands only the areas that are absolutely necessary for the optimal cosmetic result. You may experience minor bruising, mild swelling, redness and tenderness, all of which should resolve within a week or so. Most people are back to work the next morning with a natural appearance.

Dr. Rivkin’s signature Non-Surgical Chin Augmentation procedure is safe, effective and creates contours that are completely natural. Not everyone is a candidate since fillers are more limited than solid implants in how much they can project tissue. We are pleased to offer patients with more profound chin retrusion consultation with our board certified facial plastic surgeon to consider a surgical chin implant. Those patients who are determined to be candidates during their consultation and undergo the non-surgical technique may experience mild bruising, swelling, redness and soreness immediately after the procedure. The extent of these side effects will depend on which filler is used and what amount is needed. Within a few days, most patients report that they are back to normal. In rare cases, patients can experience more extensive bruising and redness. If this happens, we offer complementary vascular laser treatment to decrease the extent and duration of the bruising and redness.
Dr. Rivkin and his staff usually perform the Non-Surgical Chin Augmentation procedure with temporary fillers first so that patients can try out the look without a commitment. Once everyone involved is confident that the desired chin shape has been achieved, we can switch to the permanent filler after the temporary one is absorbed for a much more long lasting effect. We usually prefer using Volux or Restylane Lyft, which are both hyaluronic acid fillers. These are great for areas with more bone structure, like the chin and cheeks. They add volume, hold their shape well, and can last up to 2 years or more. If you're happy with the results and once the filler has worn off, you can consider Bellafill as another option. Bellafill is a permanent filler made of collagen and PMMA microspheres, which stimulates your natural collagen production. Bellafill results can last for many years.
