WHAT IS BELLAFILL?
Bellafill® is a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) filler that was FDA approved in 2006 for long term correction of nasolabial folds. Dr. Rivkin has been using Bellafill since that time, with great success. The filler consists of 80% bovine collagen and 20% PMMA microspheres. The collagen in Bellafill® provides immediate volume and lift. Over a couple of weeks, the collagen is absorbed by the body while the PMMA microspheres remain in place and create a matrix that supports the production of collagen and connective tissue by your own skin cells for lasting cosmetic improvement.
It is the first long term to permanent injectable filler approved by the FDA and it represents a new chapter in non-invasive cosmetic treatments. Studies have shown that the cosmetic effect of Bellafill® persists for 10 years or more. As a result, Dr. Rivkin’s facial sculpting and non-invasive cosmetic procedures can now have a long term to permanent effect.

FOR BELLAFILL?
For patients seeking long term to permanent correction, Bellafill® is the perfect solution. For best results, we typically suggest 2 to 4 treatments spaced 6 weeks apart.
This layering technique allows the body to build its own collagen around the PMMA microspheres, resulting in a natural appearance.
THE BELLAFILL PROCEDURE
Dr. Rivkin uses Bellafill® most often for his non surgical facial sculpting procedures, such as the Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty procedure and the Non Surgical Chin Augmentation procedure. The cosmetic result of Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty will now persist just as long as the result of a surgical nose job.
Our patients can take advantage of the increased precision of these non-surgical treatments to permanently correct small to moderate bumps or deviations on the nose easily and relatively inexpensively. They will experience permanent results without the bruising, risk, expense and downtime of surgery. When we use Bellafill®, the Non Surgical Chin Augmentation and Non Surgical Cheek Augmentation procedures will provide similar permanent volume correction as surgical chin or cheek augmentation with a silicone implant, but without surgery!
Bellafill® is also useful as a long-term correction for nasolabial folds (smile lines), vertical frown lines between the eyebrows and the marionette lines that come down from the corners of the mouth.
When using Bellafill®, Dr. Rivkin is very conservative, filling in these lines over 2 or more visits so that the result is always perfect and never overfilled. As with any injectable filler, patients may experience bruising, redness, swelling and tenderness in the area, which should subside within 2 weeks.
There is very little pain associated with the injection, as Bellafill® has some lidocaine within the syringe. For those with a low pain threshold, we can also apply topical numbing cream to make the treatment virtually pain free. Bellafill® requires a skin test to identify patients who may be allergic to the bovine collagen component of the filler.
Because the collagen used in Bellafill® is highly purified, allergic reactions are extremely rare (less than 1% in our experience). This skin test can be done in the office on the same day as your treatment.
Pros and Cons of
Bellafill
The main benefit of Bellafill® is the long-term correction it provides. By the same token, some patients prefer a more temporary approach. For those that are completely new to cosmetic fillers, we often recommend using temporary hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvederm or Voluma, to achieve the desired results for the first time.
Hyaluronic acid fillers require virtually no commitment, as they are completely reversible. After the desired results are achieved with the temporary product, the patient can feel more comfortable transitioning to a permanent solution, such as Bellafill®. Bellafill® is FDA approved for the nasolabial folds. At this time, we are using it for the permanent correction of those folds, in addition to off label uses like Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty, Non Surgical Chin Augmentation and Non Surgical Cheek Augmentation.
Although the results are immediate, the body absorbs the bovine collagen component of Bellafill® within a week. Over the course of a few weeks, that collagen is replaced by your own collagen. How much of the bovine collagen is replaced by native collagen varies with the individual. For this reason, full correction often requires several visits.
We are very pleased to be one of the first cosmetic centers in the nation to offer Bellafill® to our patients. Our experience with the product so far has been outstanding. The effect looks natural, the procedure is essentially painless, thanks to the lidocaine in Bellafill®, and Dr. Rivkin has encountered no lumping or granulomas (bumps forming under the skin).
