Microneedling Pre and Post Care Instructions Los Angeles, CA

Pre Care

  1. Avoid Sun Exposure
    • For at least 1-2 weeks before treatment: Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds, as sunburned or tanned skin is more sensitive and may lead to complications or poor healing.
    • Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily to protect your skin.
  2. Discontinue Certain Skincare Products
For 5-7 days before treatment: Avoid using any products that may irritate or exfoliate your skin, such as:
    • Retinoids (e.g., tretinoin, retinol)
    • Vitamin C serums
    • Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or Beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs)
    • Exfoliating scrubs or masks

These products can increase skin sensitivity and may lead to irritation or other issues during the microneedling process.

  3. No Waxing or Hair Removal
For at least 1-2 weeks before treatment: Avoid waxing, threading, or using depilatory creams in the treatment area. Shaving is generally fine.
  4. Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water leading up to your treatment. Proper hydration will help your skin heal more efficiently after the procedure.
  5. Avoid Active Skin Conditions
If you have active acne, eczema, rosacea, or open wounds in the treatment area, consult with your provider before proceeding with microneedling. The procedure may be postponed if there are any active skin infections or conditions.
  6. No Botox, Fillers, or Chemical Peels
For at least 2 weeks before treatment: Avoid Botox, dermal fillers, chemical peels, or other invasive procedures that may interfere with the healing process of your skin.
  7. Arrive with Clean Skin
On the day of your treatment, arrive with clean skin. Remove makeup, lotions, or sunscreen from the area to ensure the microneedling process is effective.
  8. Inform Your Provider About Any Medications
Let your provider know about any medications you’re taking, especially if they could affect skin healing, such as oral retinoids or acne medications like Accutane.
  9. Discuss Any Concerns or Questions
If you have concerns about your skin, the procedure, or your treatment goals, be sure to discuss them with your provider before starting. This ensures the treatment plan is tailored to your skin’s specific needs.

Post Care

  1. Avoid Sun Exposure
    • For at least 2 weeks after treatment: Stay out of direct sun and avoid tanning beds, as your skin will be more sensitive to UV rays.
    • Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every 2 hours if you’re outdoors. Protect your skin from UV damage to prevent pigmentation issues.
  2. Avoid Touching or Scratching the Treated Area
For at least 48 hours: Do not touch, rub, or scratch the treated area to avoid irritation, infection, or scarring. Keep your hands clean and avoid any unnecessary contact with the skin.
  3. Mild Redness, Swelling, and Sensitivity Are Normal
Immediately post-treatment: Expect mild redness, swelling, and possibly some warmth or tingling in the treated area, similar to a mild sunburn. These symptoms should subside within a few hours to a few days.
  4. Avoid Makeup for 24-48 Hours
For the first 1-2 days: Avoid applying makeup to the treated area to allow the skin to breathe and heal. If you do wear makeup after the initial 48 hours, use non-comedogenic products that are gentle on the skin.
  5. Avoid Hot Showers, Saunas, and Steam Rooms
For at least 48 hours: Avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, or anything that can cause heat and irritation to your skin. This includes activities that cause sweating, like vigorous exercise.
  6. Hydrate and Moisturize
    • Use a gentle, hydrating moisturizer to keep the skin nourished and help reduce dryness or tightness.
    • Hydrate from within by drinking plenty of water to support the healing process.
  7. Avoid Exfoliating and Strong Active Ingredients
For 5-7 days after treatment: Refrain from using exfoliating products (e.g., scrubs or acids like AHAs or BHAs) and active skincare ingredients like retinoids or Vitamin C, as they can cause irritation to the freshly treated skin.
  8. Do Not Pick or Peel the Skin
For the first week: Avoid peeling or picking at any flaking skin to prevent scarring or irritation. Let the skin naturally exfoliate.
  9. Avoid Strenuous Exercise
For at least 48 hours: Avoid intense physical activities that cause sweating, as sweat may irritate the treated area and delay healing.
  10. Monitor for Side Effects
    • Normal: Mild redness, swelling, dryness, or tightness may occur, and some light peeling may start around 3-5 days post-treatment.
    • Seek Help: If you notice any signs of infection, excessive swelling, or if symptoms persist longer than expected, contact your provider immediately.
