Pre Care Instructions
- Avoid Sun Exposure
- For at least 2 weeks before your appointment: Avoid direct sun exposure, tanning beds, or self-tanners.
- Use Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) daily to protect your skin.
- Discontinue Certain Skincare Products
1-2 weeks prior: Stop using products that may irritate or exfoliate the skin, such as:- Retinoids (e.g., tretinoin)
- Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs)
- Beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs)
- Vitamin C or other strong serums
- Exfoliating scrubs
These products can make your skin more sensitive and may interfere with the Cosmelan treatment.
- Avoid Waxing or Hair Removal
For 1-2 weeks prior: Avoid waxing, threading, or any other hair removal methods in the treatment area, as these can cause skin irritation. - Stay Hydrated and Healthy
Drink plenty of water leading up to your appointment to ensure your skin is hydrated and healthy. - Do Not Have Active Breakouts
If you have active acne or irritated skin in the treatment area, it’s best to reschedule the treatment until the skin has healed. - Avoid Chemical Peels or Other Treatments
For at least 2 weeks before: Do not undergo other treatments like chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or laser treatments in the same area, as they can interfere with the Cosmelan process. - Consultation and Skin Assessment
Ensure you’ve had a skin consultation where your provider has assessed your skin type and condition to confirm Cosmelan is suitable for you. - Inform Your Provider of Any Medications
Notify your provider if you’re on any prescription medications, especially for acne (e.g., oral retinoids or antibiotics), as this may affect your treatment. - Avoid Alcohol and Blood-Thinning Medications
For 24-48 hours prior: Avoid alcohol, aspirin, and other blood-thinning medications that could increase the risk of bruising or irritation.
Post Care Instructions
- Avoid Sun Exposure
- For 2-4 weeks post-treatment: Strictly avoid sun exposure, as your skin will be more sensitive.
- Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 50 or higher) every 2 hours throughout the day. Reapply more frequently if sweating or swimming.
- Follow the Cosmelan Aftercare Routine
Your provider will give you a home care kit that includes products like a cleanser and a maintenance cream (Cosmelan 2). Follow their instructions carefully for optimal results. - Do Not Pick or Scrub the Skin
For at least 1 week post-treatment: Avoid scrubbing, exfoliating, or picking at the skin to prevent irritation or scarring. You may experience peeling, which is normal. Let it happen naturally. - Gentle Cleansing
Use a gentle, non-exfoliating cleanser to wash your face. Avoid using harsh scrubs or anything that can irritate your skin. - Avoid Hot Showers or Saunas
For 48-72 hours: Avoid hot water, saunas, or steam rooms, as they can irritate your skin and increase redness and swelling. - Skip Makeup for the First 24 Hours
For the first day: Do not apply makeup to the treated area to allow the skin to breathe and heal properly. After 24 hours, use makeup that is gentle and non-comedogenic. - Moisturize Regularly
Keep your skin moisturized with a gentle, hydrating moisturizer. This helps support the healing process and reduces discomfort from dryness or peeling. - Avoid Excessive Touching
Refrain from touching, rubbing, or scratching your face to avoid irritation or infection. - Expect Peeling
2-7 days post-treatment: Peeling is a normal response to the treatment and usually starts around day 2-3. Let it flake off naturally—don’t force the skin to shed. - Reapply Aftercare Products
Use the Cosmelan 2 cream (or other recommended products) regularly, as instructed by your provider. This is essential for continuing the depigmentation process and preventing further hyperpigmentation. - Avoid Harsh Products
For 2 weeks: Avoid using any products that may irritate the skin, including exfoliating acids (AHA, BHA), retinoids, and active vitamin C treatments. - Monitor for Side Effects
It’s normal to experience redness, swelling, or peeling, but if you notice severe irritation, blistering, or signs of infection, contact your provider immediately.
