Fraxel / Clear + Brilliant Pre and Post Care Instructions Los Angeles, CA

Pre Care

  1. Avoid Sun Exposure
    • For at least 2 weeks prior to treatment: Avoid direct sun exposure, tanning beds, or self-tanning, as Fraxel treatments can cause pigmentation issues on sun-damaged skin.
    • Sunscreen: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily to protect your skin.
  2. Discontinue Certain Skincare Products
1-2 weeks prior to treatment: Stop using any exfoliating or irritating skincare products, such as:
    • Retinoids (e.g., tretinoin)
    • Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs)
    • Beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs)
    • Vitamin C serums
    • Exfoliating scrubs

These products can make your skin more sensitive and may increase the risk of irritation during or after the treatment.

  3. Avoid Waxing or Hair Removal
For at least 1-2 weeks before the treatment: Avoid waxing, threading, or using depilatory creams in the treatment area. Shaving is okay if needed.
  4. Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water before your treatment to keep your skin hydrated and in optimal condition for healing.
  5. Inform Your Provider About Medications
Let your provider know if you’re on any medications, particularly if you’re using oral retinoids, antibiotics, or medications that can make your skin more sensitive or prone to scarring.
  6. Postpone if You’re Sick or Have an Active Skin Issue
Reschedule if you have a cold, infection, cold sores, or any active skin irritation (acne, eczema, etc.) in the treatment area. Pretreat if prone to cold sores, let your provider know.
  7. No Chemical Peels or Other Laser Treatments
For at least 2 weeks before treatment: Avoid chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or other laser treatments to prevent overstimulation of the skin.
  8. Avoid Active Acne or Open Wounds
If you have active acne or open wounds in the treatment area, your provider may recommend postponing the procedure until the skin is healed.
  9. Plan for Downtime
Understand that Fraxel can cause some redness, swelling, and peeling, which may last several days to a week depending on the intensity of the treatment. Plan accordingly if you need to manage recovery time.
  10. Arrive with Clean Skin
On the day of the treatment, come with a clean face free of makeup, lotions, or sunscreen, as these can interfere with the procedure.

Post Care

  1. Avoid Sun Exposure
    • For at least 2 weeks post-treatment: Stay out of direct sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanners. Fraxel-treated skin is more sensitive to UV damage.
    • Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every 2 hours throughout the day, especially if you are outdoors.
  2. Expect Redness and Swelling
    • Immediately post-treatment: You may experience redness, swelling, and warmth in the treated area, similar to a mild sunburn. This should subside within a few hours to a few days.
    • Cold Compresses: Apply a cold compress to the treated area if you experience significant swelling or discomfort. This can help soothe the skin.
  3. Avoid Touching or Scratching the Treated Area
For at least 1 week: Be gentle when washing your face. Do not rub, or scratch your skin to prevent irritation, infection, or scarring.
  4. Mild Peeling or Flaking
3-7 days post-treatment: Peeling and flaking are normal as your skin begins to renew itself. Do not pick or forcefully remove the skin to avoid scarring. Let the skin exfoliate naturally.
  5. Moisturize Regularly
Use a gentle, hydrating moisturizer to help soothe dry, irritated skin and support the healing process. Your provider may give you specific aftercare products to use.
  6. Avoid Hot Water, Saunas, and Steam
For at least 48 hours: Avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, or anything that can irritate your skin. This includes activities that can cause excessive sweating, like vigorous exercise.
  7. Avoid Makeup for the First 24-48 Hours
For the first 1-2 days: Do not apply makeup to the treated area to allow the skin to heal. Afterward, use only non-comedogenic, gentle makeup.
  8. Avoid Harsh Skin Treatments
For 1-2 weeks: Refrain from using any exfoliating treatments, scrubs, retinoids, or chemical peels on the treated area until your skin has fully healed.
  9. Hydrate and Maintain Skin Health
    • Drink plenty of water to help your skin stay hydrated and support the healing process.
    • Continue to use your prescribed aftercare products to maintain skin hydration and promote healing.
  10. Monitor for Infection or Complications
    • Normal: Some redness, dryness, and mild swelling are normal.
    • Seek Help: If you experience severe swelling, blistering, pus, or any signs of infection, contact your provider immediately.
